A photographer friend asked me today if I was still doing this series...and I had to hang my head in a bit of shame, I've been slacking terribly and decided today is a good day to get back on the ball and post something. I shot this photo in Newport Rhode Island while vacationing with a group of friends...I tend to be a bit of a night owl and everyone had gone to bed for the night but I was still pretty wide eyed. So I decided to go out for an evening stroll around town and test some SUPER expired tungsten balanced film that I had recently purchased. I mounted my Hasselblad on a tripod and headed out with it on my shoulder. It was about 12:00-1:00am and numerous cars would slow down and turn on their high beams when passing me. I am sure I looked pretty ominous walking around the streets in the wee hours of the morning with something that most likely resembled more of a weapon than a camera in the darkness. I was almost positive that someone was going to call the police on me.
I made my way quietly towards the famed Newport cliff walk and the campus of Salve Regina University. Right along the water the moon was rising behind this small grove of trees that were lit by some lights from the college. I took a guess on exposure and shot two frames, one at 60 seconds and another at 90 seconds. The latter being the better shot.
The rest of my walk home along the cliffs was quiet, peaceful and in almost complete darkness other than the moonlight. I honestly didn't have much hope for this roll of film since it was so far expired (1998)...and I was guessing on most of my exposures. There weren't a ton of keepers but this shot alone was enough to make me happy...and the little bit of adventure is always fun too.
